Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds, and Pulp Fiction at the Egyptian: IT HAPPENED IN HOLLYWOOD LAST NIGHT

(Quentin Tarantino and Todd McCarthy, above.)

by Terry Keefe

The American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood hosted a sold-out double feature last night of Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds, with Quentin Tarantino in person. After both films, Todd McCarthy of Variety moderated a terrific Q&A which had Tarantino enthusiastically answering questions about his entire career until well after midnight.

A few tidbits for long-time QT fans that came out in conversation:

- The oft-rumored "Vega Brothers" film will likely never happen because everyone has gotten too old to do the story plausibly now. The plot would have had to happen chronologically before the events in Reservoir Dogs. The idea Tarantino originally had centered around a visit that Michael Madsen's Vic Vega/Mr. Blonde made to his brother, Vincent (played by John Travolta in Pulp Fiction) while he was on the trip to Amsterdam discussed in Pulp Fiction.

- He discussed James Bond a bit, and how he had wanted to follow up Pulp Fiction with an adaptation of Casino Royale, a book which had been deemed "unfilmable" by the Bond producers. His version of Casino Royale would have been set in the 60s and would have starred Pierce Brosnan, and they would have played baccarat, rather than poker.

A schedule of upcoming events by the American Cinematheque, hosted at the Egyptian and Aero Theatres, can be found at their website. For film fans, there really is no finer show in town.
